Contact Nick Pfeifer at pfeifere@newton.k12.ma.us Goals of Newton Recreation Lacrosse: To foster the individual skills while enhancing each player’s confidence and ability to collaborate on a team Overview: Sessions held on Tuesdays in the SOA at Newton North High School Session dates are: 01/7/2020 - 3/10/2020 Program is run by NNHS head varsity lacrosse coach (Nick Pfeifer) Each session will focus on instructional stickwork, tactical awareness and fast-paced competitive games of speedball. Speedball is a low contact fast-paced lacrosse mini game with 5 players per team. Please Note: Spots go quickly--so sign-up today.   NEWTON RECREATION INDOOR LACROSSE PROGRAM Safety First 2020 PROGRAM RULES & INFORMATION No sticks or balls allowed in hallways or stairways. No shooting allowed during warm ups. Use designated areas for “Wall Ball”. Have your equipment on at all times. Report ALL Injuries Immediately (even the minor ones) to Coaching Staff. Equipment All players should have a gym bag to store their personal belongings. Helmets, mouth pieces, gloves, arm & shoulder pads Appropriate sneakers. Put your name on all of your equipment!! Bring a water bottle!!!!!

Winter Clinics The Newton Parks and Recreation Department and the Newton Girls Lacrosse program will again be running a winter clinic for Girls Lacrosse Players.  The clinics will take place in the Indoor Recreation Complex, located in the athletic facilities at Newton North High School.  These clinics are appropriate for new players as well as girls who have played before. We will work on improving skills and we will also have a lot of fun!   Coaches: Coaches will include current NGL youth coaches, girls who play on Newton high school teams and a woman who is a former Newton and Babson lacrosse player.   Fees:Registration Fee- $130 .00Online Deposit- $60.00  On your daughter’s first clinic day you will pay the remaining fee of $70  by check to Newton Girls Lacrosse.  There will be a NGL representative on site to collect these fees  Schedule: Saturday afternoons January 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th, February 1st, 15th, 29th, and March 7th   1-2PM for grades 1-42-3PM for grades 5-8   Equipment: Participants need their own stick, goggles, and mouth guard. Players will not be allowed to participate without goggles or a mouth guard.   Registration:newtonma.myrec.com

Two levels of swimming lessons on Saturday mornings. Those who are just becoming comfortable in the water will be on one side of the pool and those who can swim the length of the pool will be swimming in lanes on the other side of the pool. When registering please indicate which level your child is at. Please bring a towel and bathing suit each week. Parents are asked to assist with changing in the locker room. This program is designed for individuals with disabilities. Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills – Swimmers will have 1:1 support in the pool as the learn the basics of swimming.  Athletes will be supported in bobbing, going underwater, jumping in, floating, gliding, flutter kick and front crawl. Level 2: Stroke Development – Participants will be swimming laps for the entire session.  Coaches will be on hand to help with stroke development.  Swimmers should already be comfortable and independent in the water and be able to swim across the pool.

The Newton Parks & Recreation Department offers Weekend swim lessons during the school year held at the Newton North High School Pool.Swim Lesson Fees$80.00 for residents of Newton, $100.00 for non-residents. Fees must be paid in full and are non-refundable once the session has begun. Winter Session #2 DatesBegins the weekend of February 8th/9th Concludes on the weekend of April 4th/5th. There will be no classes held on February 22nd/23rd due to the school vacation week. There are no refunds or makeup classes for students that miss a day of class. In the event the facility is closed (ex: snowstorm) you will receive a credit applied to your account that can be used for any Parks & Recreation program including future swim lessons. Program Information The Swim Program will be taught by Swim Instructors and their assistants. Newton Parks & Recreation is pleased to offer a Lifeguard Training course for Winter 2020The course will be an American Red Cross program for individuals not currently certified. This course is the traditional, in-person format. Course Dates & TimesFebruary 17th, 18th, 19 & 20th9:00am-4:00pmStudents must attend all sessions. Absences/ Tardiness will result in dismissal from course. Last day of course has extra time built in. Course is designed to be completed in 25 hours and 25 minutes. PrerequisitesStudents must be at least 15 years of age on or before the last day of the course. This is a Red Cross guideline and there are no exceptions. Proof of age will be required on the first day. (Driver's license/permit/passport etc is accepted)On the first day, students will take the swim test consisting of the following:300 yard swim demonstrating competent breaststroke and/or front crawl with rhythmic breathing. 2 minutes of treading water with legs only.Timed event 1 minute 40 minutes: Swim 20 yards, surface dive to 7 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, swim back 20 yards (NO goggles)Students must pass the swim test before continuing with the course. Students who do not meet the standards will be dismissed from the course. There are no refunds for students who do not pass. Newton Parks & Recreation is pleased to offer a Lifeguard Training course for Winter 2020The course will be an American Red Cross program for individuals not currently certified. This course is the traditional, in-person format. Course Dates & TimesFebruary 17th, 18th, 19 & 20th9:00am-4:00pmStudents must attend all sessions. Absences/ Tardiness will result in dismissal from course. Last day of course has extra time built in. Course is designed to be completed in 25 hours and 25 minutes. PrerequisitesStudents must be at least 15 years of age on or before the last day of the course. This is a Red Cross guideline and there are no exceptions. Proof of age will be required on the first day. (Driver's license/permit/passport etc is accepted)On the first day, students will take the swim test consisting of the following:300 yard swim demonstrating competent breaststroke and/or front crawl with rhythmic breathing. 2 minutes of treading water with legs only.Timed event 1 minute 40 minutes: Swim 20 yards, surface dive to 7 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, swim back 20 yards (NO goggles)Students must pass the swim test before continuing with the course. Students who do not meet the standards will be dismissed from the course. There are no refunds for students who do not pass. It is highly suggested that skills are practiced ahead of time. Course Information The Lifeguard Training program will consist of the following topics:  The Professional Lifeguard  Facility Safety & Patron Surveillance Injury Prevention Water Rescue  Caring for Head, Neck & Spinal Injuries Cardiac Emergencies & Using an AED Breathing Emergencies First Aid CPR Successful completion of all training hours and the final written and practical exams will result in a American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certificate valid for 2 years. FAQ'sWhat should I bring to the course?Bring with you a bathing suit (one piece only for girls), three towels, flip flops, water, snacks, lunch, warm clothes for the classroom portion, and something to take notes with.If I don't pass the pretest or final test, can I get a refund?No. The course fees are non refundable. Enrolling in the course takes up a seat in the class. Courses are designed for a specific number of students. Where is the course held?The course is held entirely at Newton North High School. We will spend half the time in the pool area and half the time in a classroom. Enter the high school through the Athletic Entrance. Speedball is a low contact fast-paced lacrosse mini game with 5 players per team. Please Note: Spots go quickly--so sign-up today.   NEWTON RECREATION INDOOR LACROSSE PROGRAM Safety First 2020 PROGRAM RULES & INFORMATION No sticks or balls allowed in hallways or stairways. No shooting allowed during warm ups. Use designated areas for “Wall Ball”. Have your equipment on at all times. Report ALL Injuries Immediately (even the minor ones) to Coaching Staff. Equipment All players should have a gym bag to store their personal belongings. Helmets, mouth pieces, gloves, arm & shoulder pads Appropriate sneakers. Put your name on all of your equipment!!
