The course will be an American Red Cross program for individuals not currently certified. This course is the traditional, in-person format.

Course Dates & Times

April 16th to 19th
9:00am-4:00pm

(Tuesday to Friday- no class on Monday due to Boston Marathon)


Students must attend all sessions. Absences/ Tardiness will result in dismissal from course. Last day of course has extra time built in. Course is designed to be completed in 25 hours and 25 minutes. 

Registration Fee:

$400.00 due at time of online registration
Includes course tuition, access to Red Cross Lifeguarding Manual, CPR Mask, Whistle & Red Cross fees.


Prerequisites

Students must be at least 15 years of age on or before the last day of the course. This is a Red Cross guideline and there are no exceptions. Proof of age will be required on the first day. (Driver's license/permit/passport etc is accepted)


On the first day, students will take the swim test consisting of the following:

300 yard swim demonstrating competent breaststroke and/or front crawl with rhythmic breathing. 
2 minutes of treading water with legs only.
Timed event 1 minute 40 seconds: Swim 20 yards, surface dive to 10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, swim back 20 yards (NO goggles)

Students must pass the swim test before continuing with the course. Students who do not meet the standards will be dismissed from the course. There are no refunds for students who do not pass. It is highly suggested that skills are practiced ahead of time. 

Course Information 

Successful completion of all training hours and the final written and practical exams will result in a American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certificate (With CPR, AED, First Aid) valid for 2 years from the course completion date.

The written exam required a minimum passing grade of 80%

The practical skills is a pass/fail. Students must show competency in the rescues
Students will be given as much time needed to practice the skills taught before taking the tests


FAQ's



What should I bring to the course?

Bring with you a bathing suit (one piece only for girls), three towels, flip flops, water, snacks, lunch, warm clothes for the classroom portion, and something to take notes with.

If I don't pass the pretest or final test, can I get a refund?

No. The course fees are non refundable. Enrolling in the course takes up a seat in the class. Courses are designed for a specific number of students. 


Where is the course held?

The course is held entirely at Newton North High School. We will spend half the time in the pool area and half the time in a classroom. Enter the high school through the Main Entrance.

What happens if there is a snowstorm or other event that causes cancellation? 

If there is a snowstorm or other facility closure the class may be cancelled or postponed. In that event, all participants will receive an email as soon as possible. If the class has to be cancelled, student will receive full refund.



Are there breaks during the class?

Yes, we will break periodically for meals, restroom and coffee. There is a fridge and microwave available. You are allowed to leave for the lunch break. There are several restaurants near bye. 

Can I bring a Laptop?

Yes, if you prefer to use your laptop for notes you can.

ONE WEEK FROM THE START OF THE CLASS THE INSTRUCTOR WILL EMAIL YOU TO CONFIRM THE COURSE, SEND OUT THE LIFEGUARD MANUAL, AND ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS BEFORE THE START OF THE PROGRAM.
